Calibration versus verification

Calibration establishes the relationship between a machine's indications and a reference value, with a stated uncertainty. What is usually sold as CMM calibration is a performance verification against ISO 10360-2 or ASME B89.4.1, often combined with adjustment.

Both routes are offered. Older machines are frequently held to B89.4.1 by customer preference; newer installations verify against ISO 10360-2 directly.

What a visit covers

Scales, geometry, probing and length measurement error are checked in sequence, with results recorded before any adjustment is made.

  • 01

    Scale and reader head

X, Y and Z scales are inspected and cleaned; reader head output is checked and adjusted.

  • 02

    Geometry

Straightness, linearity and squareness are checked in the XY, ZX and ZY planes.

  • 03

    Length measurement error

E0 and E150 tested per ISO 10360-2, 105 measurements against stated MPE.

  • 04

    Probing error

PFTU tested per ISO 10360-5 on a dedicated calibrated test sphere.

  • 05

    Repair scope

Probe heads, air bearings, drives, counterbalance and controller retrofit after crash or relocation.

Sequence of a calibration visit

  • 01

    Thermal soak

Artifacts and machine are allowed to stabilize to room temperature before testing begins.

  • 02

    As-found testing

Geometry, length measurement error and probing error are recorded before adjustment.

  • 03

    Adjustment

Geometric compensation and error map updates are applied where the controller supports them.

  • 04

    As-left verification

Tests are repeated and results issued on a certificate with stated uncertainty.

Why Louisville CMM Calibration and Repair

  • 01

    As-found recorded first

Out-of-tolerance findings are documented before adjustment, supporting a reverse-traceability review.

  • 02

    Both standards offered

Verification is available against ISO 10360-2 or ASME B89.4.1 depending on the certificate the machine was built to.

  • 03

    Repair alongside calibration

Air bearings, drives and probe heads are serviced in the same visit where practical.
