Frequently Asked Questions

Procurement and quality questions, answered the way a supplier questionnaire asks them.

Common Questions

If a question below is not covered, it can be answered directly — see the contact page.

How often should a CMM be calibrated in an automotive supplier plant?

Most IATF 16949 quality systems run an annual interval, tightened for machines feeding PPAP submissions or running high part volumes. The basis for the interval is documented, not assumed.

What is the difference between calibration and verification?

Calibration establishes the relationship between indications and reference values with a stated uncertainty. Verification confirms the machine still meets a stated specification. Most shop-floor work is verification.

What does ISO 10360-2 actually test?

Length measurement error, E0 and E150, measured at five calibrated lengths in seven positions, three repeats each, for 105 measurements checked against the stated MPE.

Can calibration be done on-site, and how long is the machine down?

Bridge, gantry and cantilever CMMs are typically calibrated on-site. Time on the machine depends on axis travel and scope of testing, confirmed at quote.

What temperature does the room need to be for testing?

ISO 1 sets 20°C as the reference temperature. Precision artifacts need hours of thermal soak beforehand; a stated gradient per hour and per meter matters more than the absolute reading.

What happens if the machine fails as-found?

As-found results are recorded before any adjustment. The magnitude of the deviation and the affected period support a reverse-traceability review of parts measured since the last passing calibration.

Is the certificate accredited, and how do I check the scope?

Certificates are issued under the performing laboratory's ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. Scope is checked against the accreditation body's public directory before a request is accepted.

What is a CMC and why does it matter to my tolerances?

CMC is the smallest uncertainty a laboratory can claim within its scope. It needs to support the tolerance being inspected, typically at a 4:1 test uncertainty ratio.

Will this satisfy an IATF 16949 or AS9100 auditor?

IATF 16949 clause 7.1.5.3 requires evidence that an external laboratory is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 or otherwise acceptable to the customer. Certificates document that chain.

What is an error map, and can it be updated on my controller?

The volumetric error compensation map corrects for geometric deviations across the measuring volume. Some controllers allow a field update; OEM-locked maps may require factory involvement.
